State Highway 92 Stengel’s Hill
Design-Build

On this CDOT design-build project, Hamilton was responsible for the design and construction of a new 560-foot x 43-foot four-span bridge on SH 92. The bridge has 63-inch Bulb-Tee girders, cast-in-place concrete deck, steel H-piling, and 60-inch diameter drilled caissons. In addition, the project included 1.6 miles of new highway built adjacent to the existing highway and piling adjacent to and crossing over a Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) mainline. This project also included 11,000 sf of MSE walls, a reinforced concrete box culvert, 200,000 cy of roadway embankment/excavation, and 13,000 tons of HMA paving.

Hamilton’s design-build team utilized Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC) to make significant improvements to the existing designs of the retaining walls, bridge, and roadway embankment criteria. This resulted in reducing the amount of embankment and accelerating the schedule. The project included extensive collaboration and coordination with CDOT and UPRR to obtain C&M agreement with continued coordination with UPRR during construction. Close collaboration with subcontractors mitigated drainage and settlement concerns to ensure milestones were met. Phased construction over multiple seasons ensured successful subcontractor management.

“Hamilton quickly resolved issues with no impact to the project. The team’s construction expertise and collaboration allowed for additional work items outside of the contract to be executed without delaying the overall project schedule.”
- Project Engineer, Jacobs Engineering
