Alaska Highway MP 1309 Tok River Bridge Replacement

This project is located on the Alaska Highway, 80 miles from the Canadian border and approximately five hours away from the nearest major town or airport. In this remote location, Hamilton experienced extreme weather conditions and overcame logistical challenges to constructed a 3-span, 360-foot-long x 43-foot-wide Bulb-T precast girder bridge over the Tok River, replacing the existing steel truss bridge.
Logistics and weather proved to be the most challenging part of this project. Girders were hauled over 300 miles to the project site from Anchorage. Pile driving for the permanent structure required pre-boring the frozen ground with a drill rig to allow pile installation. In addition, Hamilton successfully maintained traffic during the severe Alaskan winter by shifting traffic onto a 6-span detour structure. |
