CDOT SH 60 Bridge Replacement over the South Platte River
This project included the construction of a new 7-span 800-foot-long bridge crossing the South Platte River. The new bridge was built off-line with new alignment, adjacent to the existing bridge and SH 60. While building the new alignment, Hamilton worked with CDOT to adjust phasing plans in order to reduce traffic shifts as planned on the original configuration. As a result, upon completion of the new alignment, traffic simply shifted onto the final alignment without additional shifts.
The demolition plan and approach to construction remained flexible for the duration of the project in order react to changing river flows. Hamilton worked simultaneously on multiple sites within the project limits to realize economies of resources and accelerate the schedule. Traffic phasing through the project allowed for work on multiple sites without closures. Hamilton managed river flows by scheduling in-water work during the late fall and winter months when river flows are at their lowest levels. Construction of multiple piers in the Platte River required diverting the river and installing cofferdams. Hamilton and CDOT worked collaboratively during the spring months when bridge demolition was required to be completed. The new bridge was open and impacts to the traveling public were eliminated. This allowed Hamilton and CDOT to identify low flow periods to perform bridge demolition in a safe and efficient manner with the least disturbance to the river and no impacts to the traveling public. Clear communication and collaboration ensured completion of milestones. “I have been able to confidently put my trust in this, reliable, experienced and professional team. I would highly recommend this team for any CDOT project in Region 4 and elsewhere ... they brought to bear resources, knowledge and skill to complete the project. Overcoming adverse situation is always a test of any contracting situation and Hamilton Construction Company preceded in a solution driven manner.” - CDOT Project Engineer |
