Methow/Carlton, Washington

Methow River Bridges Structural Rehabilitation Phase 3

Three bridges on SR 153 were in need of major structural rehabilitation in order for this vital section of highway to continue to serve the traveling public. Bridge 10, 17, and 20 span the Methow River on SR 153 in North Central Washington and provide the only route of travel for several communities.

Work included major retrofits with self-consolidating concrete and the rehabilitation of 13 bridge columns. The original scope of work for Pier 4 of Bridge 10 required the most work and included diverting a portion of the Methow River, excavating down to the footing, installing and grouting two column jackets along with the standard column and strut repairs, installing containment systems above the river, and restoring the shoreline and access routes to original condition.

When water levels threatened the construction access plan, Hamilton kept the project moving forward by securing multiple construction easements to access the piers.

Improved access, utilization of alternative traffic control, and utilization of a mobile work platform beneath the bridge deck was critical to the overall success of the job. Impacts to the traveling public were minimized and highway 153 remained open for the duration of the project. Work was completed with three working days remaining in the contract.

“In addition to the original contract work, several project changes occurred and were handled at the lowest level possible. WSDOT and Hamilton partnered to achieve solutions that were agreeable to both parties. A strong partnership between Hamilton and WSDOT was established and maintained throughout the duration of the project … Hamilton staff, through their continuing efforts to achieve a high level of client satisfaction, facilitated this partnership.”
– WSDOT Assistant Project Manager
