Denali National Park, Alaska
Polychrome Area Improvements
CM/GC [Construction Manager/General Contractor delivery method]
This CM/GC project is located 125 miles southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, in Denali National Park. The project includes constructing a 475-foot-long bridge spanning the active Pretty Rocks landslide. Three contracting firms joined to create a collaborative CM/GC team with Hamilton being responsible for bridge substructure and minor structures.
Project challenges include remote logistics, constrained site, difficult access, blasting, rock excavation, setting up a remote worker camp, sensitive environment, extreme weather, and establishing laydown/staging areas. Every aspect of this challenging project required robust participation by all team members in a highly collaborative CM/GC process. From the project kick off through final design, the team simultaneously developed design and material procurement needs. The team strategized to develop multiple work packages with structures, structural detailing, and logistics, with landslide and rock slopes being among the critical issues addressed during pre-construction services. The CM/GC team with FHWA, Western Federal Lands, and specialty subcontractors progressed a complex inter-disciplinary design from 30% to final design in less than six months. The design packages were structured to support numerous contracting options to expedite critical procurement and construction practices. The result was a savings of $40M and one year off the project duration. |
