Glenn Highway, Alaska

Glenn Hwy MP 78 Chickaloon River Bridge Replacement

This Hamilton project included construction of a new a three-span 45-foot x 350-foot-long precast bulb-tee girder bridge with cast-in-place deck. The two center piers are founded on 10-foot-diameter shafts approximately 55-feet-deep and the two abutments include five-foot shafts approximately the same depth. In order to access the work, we constructed a seven-span temporary work trestle.

The success of this project was Hamilton’s ability to accelerate our operations and complete the project in two abbreviated construction seasons. Hamilton was able to fast-track the permit process and obtain all necessary permits in less than a month. To accommodate the new roadway, project plans called for a lightweight concrete overlay on top of the new bridge deck – a first for the state of Alaska. Hamilton partnered with the concrete supplier to fast track trial batches in order to expedite mix design approval. The final product exceeded owner expectations for both quality and durability.

Despite the challenges, the Hamilton team was able to complete construction on time. This was accomplished through submittal and material procurement acceleration; starting early and working late into the construction season (which required moving snow, heating concrete, and dealing with inclement Alaska spring, fall, and winter); accelerating work and planning ahead for potential risks; coordinating early with stakeholders to incorporate concerns into the work schedule; and staffing the project to deal with issues at a moment’s notice to eliminate project impacts.
Major Project Elements:
  • Bridge Construction
  • Accelerated Schedule
  • Early Collaboration with Stakeholders
  • In-Water Work
  • Temporary Work Trestle
