Southern Oregon

I-5 Weaver Bundle 306
Design-Build

The project included replacing six load-restricted bridge structures and repairing one, along a seven-mile stretch of I-5 in southern Oregon. Two structures crossed the South Umpqua River and one crossed Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad (CORP) mainline tracks. Through effective design and construction methods, work on I-5 bridge structures was performed simultaneously, in a single five-month construction season, significantly reducing the overall construction schedule.

Collaboration of a multidiscipline project team resulted in modified phasing plans for traffic staging and sequencing to construct seven bridge structures simultaneously. To minimize impacts, the use of new cast-in-place concrete retaining walls immediately behind the existing bridge bents allowed the new bridge abutments to be installed under traffic.

Working closely with numerous stakeholders (including local businesses, ODOT, and the railroad), the design-build process was fast-tracked and construction on four of the highest impact structures was completed in a single 26-week season. This allowed us to complete the mainline segment of the work early, and turn over the complete facility for public use 18 months early.

“… that the development and implementation of the final mitigation strategy was a long and involved process; that it required a large-scale and persistent effort by the Design-Builder; that only through the development of collaborative problem solving relationships with the regulators by the Design-Builder was it possible to investigate the breadth of mitigation alternatives developed on the way to the final solution. We believe that the level of effort expended by the Design-Builder exceeds the level of effort that one would anticipate through the review of the OTIA III Environmental Performance Standards and that this level of effort in its self, is worthy of recognition.”
