This project is part of a re-surfacing and improvement project on University Avenue in Fairbanks, Alaska. University Avenue is a high-volume arterial route and functions as the primary north-south transportation corridor. Hamilton's work included installing a temporary pedestrian detour bridge, temporary work bridge, demolition of the existing 3-span University Avenue Bridge over the Chena River, and constructing the new 3-span structure.
For the most part, the Chena River freezes over in most locations. Our project happened to be downstream of a power plant that releases hot water into the river, causing our jobsite ice to be highly variable. Access by boat on the river was nearly impossible by the end of October due to the ice, but because of the warm water, the river didn’t ice over completely, creating challenging access conditions. While this project was not the first winter work in Alaska for the Hamilton Alaska Division, Fairbanks set the bar for coldest weather for our crews. Hamilton has a respect for negative temperatures; we know how to use the cold to our advantage; and we keep our equipment and crew safe. |
